***** The grande dame of baltimore clubs
Posted: November 20, 2008
It's been there since the 70s when it was called the Pink Hippopotamus. I've seen it through many incarnations, but the dance side has remained the same. It's always fun on weekends. It actually gets pretty mixed on Saturday nights with straight couples going. It's kind of a perennial for Baltimore.

Been there and if your not a regular the men or boys I should say, treat you like a straight man looking for a sports complex. I know several of the bar tenders and its all about the hustle of drinks not about can I help you what do you want or I'll be back. For out of towners GO ELSEWHERE DON"T WASTE YOUR MOPNEY!

***** Hippo is Lame

The Hippo always plays bad music, has the nastiest looking guys and doesn't look like it's been updated since the 1940's.

***** Not What it's Cracked Up To Be
Posted: May 14, 2008
I went to The Hippo during a trip to Baltimore and had heard a great deal about it. Unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations compared to other clubs in cities I've visited. Service was poor, sound system bad, and the attitude hostile. Upon a return to the "Charm City", I would probably pass this place up.

***** Fun bar
Posted: March 06, 2008
Have had a good time at the Hippo, nice dancing and love the set up but have to mark it down through no fault of their own. The last few times we've been there, we've had some problems walking there through the neighborhood, seems like there are more drug dealers on the corners and they can be a bit hostile if they know you're heading to the gay bar.

***** First Time but Not the Last Time
Posted: May 10, 2007
I went to the Hippo 2 weeks ago for the first time and I really enjoyed it. A lot of hot men there and the bartenders were really nice and on the ball with the drinks. I can't wait to go back again.

***** Great Dancing and Karaoke
First to Review - March 06, 2006
The Hippo (along with Grand Central) is one of the two major general-purpose bars in Baltimore, both located at the corner of Charles and Eager Streets. Whereas Grand Central has a nicer pub and billiards area, The Hippo's pride and joy is its huge, very impressive dancefloor. The actual dance area is sunk below the floor surrounding it, so that shy spectators can get a great look at all the sweaty, shirtless dancing fools. The Hippo has karaoke in the back room on Wednesday and Friday night; this is a popular, well-attended event, so if you want to be a star for the evening, this is your chance. Overall, the crowd at The Hippo is all ages, though the dancefloor is dominated by the cute twinkish types.
